After a thirty year love-affair with the Brahms Sonatas and the Arpeggione Sonata of Schubert, Robin decided to record them with Tim. It was a happy occasion, a ‘live’ recording backed up by a recording of the rehearsal. All three pieces are ‘late’ works from the two composers, outpourings of their mature genius. Although they were not conceived for the viola, they have become so firmly appropriated as to be considered the greatest works for that instrument.
